Cinema release: FASSBINDER – a documentary by Annekatrin Hendel

Fassbinder 17 04 15 rechtsOn 30 April Annekatrin Hendel’s documentary FASSBINDER, produced by IT WORKS! Medien in cooperation with the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation and based on an idea by Juliane Maria Lorenz, is being released in German cinemas. In the film Hendel traces the development of Fassbinder’s career without drawing a strict dividing line between life and art. She explores the roots of the rage of New German Cinema’s enfant terrible and of the brashness, determination and assertiveness he needed to become the artist he did. Hendel has already made a name for herself as a director with ambitious documentaries such as VATERLANDSVERRÄTER (Traitors to the Fatherland) and ANDERSON. FASSBINDER features the voices not only of friends and colleagues of Fassbinder’s such as Irm Hermann, Margit Carstensen, Harry Baer, Hanna Schygulla, Volker Schlöndorff and Juliane Maria Lorenz but also and above all the subject himself – in autobiographical scenes from his films, rare interviews and passages from his early literary work. Using hitherto unpublished material, Hendel provides a fresh insight into one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.

Before the documentary’s general release in German cinemas, it will premiere in Berlin’s Volksbühne on 27 April. The documentary will be premiered on television by the German-French broadcaster ARTE on 27 May.
