The stage version of Fox and His Friends (Faustrecht der Freiheit) based on the original film script by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (with collaboration by Christian Hohoff) was first performed in Heidelberg in 2009. It deals with the impossibility of buying one’s way into a certain group or social stratum.

The story is essentially an inverted version of the Brothers Grimm tale “Hans in Luck.” The unemployed carnival worker and hustler Franz, who is known as Fox, the Talking Head, wins half a million deutschmarks in the lottery and hopes to use his newfound wealth to gain access to a more affluent social circle. He falls deeply in love with Eugen, the bankrupt son of a businessman who lets Franz finance him and convinces him to invest in Eugen’s parents’ ailing printing business. In return Eugen teaches Franz how to behave appropriately and promises to introduce him to a more cultivated world. However, Fox ultimately finds that class distinctions remain insurmountable. Once his money is gone, Eugen has not interested in continuing their relationship. The dark fairytale ends tragically.

The main roles are played by Till Brinkmann, Marius Bechen,Klaus Wildermuth and Tomasso Tessitori. The play is directed by Ulrich Hub, who has also designed the set and costumes.

Faustrecht der Freiheit will premiere at the FWT on October, 8:00 p.m.
