HANDS ON FASSBINDER – #5 TELEVISION STORIES

Bild 2 - rechte Seitenbande zu HOF #5 300On October 27 and 28 with lectures and discussions in Berlin

The series of events taking place in 2012 under the umbrella title of HANDS ON FASSBINDER is a collective project mounted by the German film journal REVOLVER, the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (.CHB), the Berlin cinema Zeughauskino, the RWFF and the German Federal Agency for Civic Education. The project has been made possible by a grant from the German Capital Cultural Fund

TELEVISION STORIES deals with the realities of TV-series production in Germany. For Fassbinder, television was not just a very important medium but also a faithful production partner. The series he created with the broadcaster WDR are today regarded as numbering among his major works, above all his film adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ. In addition, his two-part science fiction film WORLD ON A WIRE, the five-part “worker series” EIGHT HOURS ARE NOT A DAY, and the project DEBIT AND CREDIT, which was never realized, have each in their own way written film history. As part of HANDS ON FASSBINDER, the controversies surrounding these works will be discussed from a current perspective. The working possibilities and conditions available to TV-series creators today reveal the enormous changes that have taken place in the television landscape since Fassbinder’s death. And what does the viewing public actually want to see now that it can choose from at least ten times as many TV channels as it could back then?
