Peer Raben passed away

Peer Raben and Rainer Werner Fassbinder met as young men in Munich and collaborated until RWF’s untimely death. Among their work together are also theater plays such as the early ‘Ajax’, “an archaic operetta after Sophocles.“ Born in 1940 as Wilhelm Rabenbauer, he died on January 21 near Munich. Raben was musician, composer, author, and director. Apart from his much admired music scores for Fassbinder movies, he also composed music for films by such directors as Daniel Schmid, Werner Schroeter, Robert van Ackeren, and Barbet Schröder, and finally for Wong Kar-wai’s “2046”. Raben had been sick for year; therefore it was a particular joy to learn that in 2006 the World Soundtrack Award was bestowed upon him in appreciation for his life work.
Our image shows him with a hat in 1970. Depicted together with Harry Baer, Kurt Raab (standing) and Margit Carstensen. Peer Raben - listed in the stage bill as Wil Rabenbauer - plays the role of Ridolfo. The photograph is derived from the TV recording of the RWF play “The Coffeehouse.”
