Karlheinz Böhm´s 80th Birthday
Charity Gala on Germany’s National TV station ZDF on April 23 at 8:15 PM
On March 16, Karlheinz Böhm has completed his 80th year. On April 23, the German national TV station ZDF will air a 90-minute Charity Gala to honor him and to highlight his contribution through his foundation “Menschen für Menschen” (“People for People”). Entitled “All Good Wishes to Karlheinz Böhm – A Life for Africa”, the program begins at 8:15 pm.
His collaboration with Rainer Werner Fassbinder in the 1970s enabled Karlheinz Böhm to create substantial character roles. Among others, he appeared in such films as MARTHA, FONTANE EFFI BRIEST, FOX AND HIS FRIENDS and MOTHER KÜSTERS GOES TO HEAVEN. On stage, he appeared under Fassbinder’s direction in Chekhov’s Uncle Vania (TAT, Frankfurt) and Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler (Freie Volksbühne, Berlin).
On May 16, 1981 he initiated the second great vocation of his life. In the TV show “Wetten, dass...?” (“Let’s bet”) Böhm claimed that not even every third TV watcher would give the equivalent of a dollar to people suffering in Africa’s Sahel zone. As a consequence of this bet, the viewing public donated the considerable sum of 1.2 Million Deutschmarks. Shortly thereafter, on November 13, 1981, Böhm used this financial basis to found his organization “Menschen für Menschen” which has kept him tirelessly busy for the past 27 years.
