Special Edition DVD "Germany’s Autumn" released by Kinowelt / ARTHAUS

Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff, Margarethe von Trotta, Alexander Kluge and Reinhard Hauff and other major German filmmakers in one DVD box set.

This DVD box set contains six major German films about the country’s terrorist era, thus bringing together an important piece of contemporary history in one collection. The developments that went badly awry in the German Federal Republic in the 1970s reached a climax during the months of September and October, 1977 when businessman Hanns Martin Schleyer, who was president of the employers’ association, was murdered after weeks of being held hostage by the German terrorist group, Red Army Faction, or RAF. At the same time, a Lufthansa passenger aeroplane was hijacked to Mogadishu in a bid to secure the release of RAF members Jan-Carl Raspe, Gudrun Ensslin and Andreas Baader from Stammheim high security prison in Stuttgart. After the seized aircraft was stormed, the imprisoned terrorists committed suicide. The cinematic chronicle of this period begins with Volker Schlöndorff’s and Margarethe von Trotta’s THE LOST HONOUR OF KATHARINA BLUM (1975); it continues with GERMANY IN AUTUMN, a portmanteau film on which Fassbinder worked together with ten other filmmakers (Alf Brustellin, Bernhard Sinkel, Alexander Kluge, Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus, Peter Schubert, Maximiliane Mainka, Edgar Reitz, Katja Rupé, Volker Schlöndorff, and Hans-Peter Cloos), and Fassbinder’s THE THIRD GENERATION (1978/79). The edition also includes Reinhard Hauff’s works KNIFE IN THE HEAD (1978) and STAMMHEIM (1985). All of the films in this collection, including Margarethe von Trotta’s THE GERMAN SISTERS (1981), document this extremely tense time during the Federal Republic of Germany’s early history in very different ways. They depict a process of social gestation that was both intense and crucial.
