Berlin Alexanderplatz: Remastered on Tour in the USA
Berkeley and San Francisco art house cinema programmes in May/June
The restored version of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s magnum opus BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ is once again making its way from the East to the West Coast of the USA. Fassbinder’s work, which runs at over 15 ½ hours, made a similar journey back in 1983, when it first captivated American audiences. The current screenings of the film follow a successful exhibition about the work entitled, "Fassbinder: Berlin Alexanderplatz", which was held in New York. The film will be screened in and around San Francisco in several performances between May 30 and June 28. Berkeley Art Museum (BAM) and the affiliated Pacific Film Archive (PFA), both institutes of the University of California, will screen all 13 episodes and the epilogue between May 30 and June 7. For details of screenings at the "Visual Arts Center" on the university campus in San Francisco’s major suburb of Berkeley please go to the URL: http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/filmseries/berlin_alexanderplatz2008
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will show the work in its entirety once again from June 5 to 28. For details of screening dates and times, please visit the museum's website at: http://www.sfmoma.org/calendar/calendar_event.asp?eventid=1199&etype=11&func=repeat
The Goethe Institute in San Francisco also provides a list of all the work's west coast screenings on its website: http://www.goethe.de/Ins/us/saf/ver/en3243346v.htm
