"Barbara Sukowa – Mein Leben", TV Portrait on ARTE on 14 September 2008

Also, her new film is now showing in cinemas: THE INVENTION OF CURRIED SAUSAGE

The New York based film and stage artist Barbara Sukowa is returning to the silver screen in a powerful new female role and thus taking a step closer to her native Germany.

Her new film THE INVENTION OF CURRIED SAUSAGE (based on the novella by Uwe Timm) centres on a love story set in the last days of the war. Against the grim background of food shortages and post-war familial upheaval, the framework plot which gave the film its name seems almost like a nice, cosy tale in which to embed the real story. The official cinema release day was 11 September 2008.

Barbara Sukowa's first major film role was not just an event, it was one of the most beautiful performances in cinematic history, for her portrayal of Mieze in Fassbinder's BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (1980) remains unforgettable. By 1976, RWF had already spotted her versatile talents in WOMEN IN NEW YORK and in 1981, he cast her as his LOLA – his version of THE BLUE ANGEL, which had already made Marlene Dietrich a star. From then on, Sukowa also performed as a singer in concert halls around the world. Not only did she worked repeatedly with Margarethe von Trotta, in THE GERMAN SISTERS (1981) and DIE GEDULD DER ROSA LUXEMBURG (1986), among others, but she also collaborated with legendary directors such as Michael Cimino (THE SICILIAN, 1987) and Lars von Trier (EUROPA, 1991), to name but a few.

Now, the joint Franco-German broadcaster ARTE is dedicating a 45-minute programme to her as part of its "Mein Leben" series. The portrait is scheduled to air on Sunday, 14 September 2008 at 06.15 p.m. The documentary, fittingly subtitled "Portrait of a woman who is constantly reinventing herself" covers the important and diverse stages of her life as an artist. During the making of the film, the crew accompanied Barbara Sukowa to various events, including the premiere of BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ Remastered at the 57th Berlin Film Festival 2007.

The programme will be repeated on 20 September at 06.45 a.m. on ARTE.
