Our Belated Best Wishes to Hanna Schygulla on her 65th Birthday and for Another Award...
US Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress
The year 2009 starts with one truly good piece of news...
The National Society of Film Critics (NSFC) awarded Hanna Schygulla, who recently turned 65, the prize for Best Supporting Actress 2008 for her role in Fatih Akin’s THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (2007).
In the film, she plays a desperate mother who sees her daughter headed for trouble and yet is unable to save her. During the entire film, the dignity she lends to the situation is tangible, and remains present even when her unbearable pain causes her to implode. This is one of Hanna Schygulla’s most mesmerizing and gracious roles, comparable to her portrayals in DIE BLAUE GRENZE, 2005, or WINTER JOURNEY, 2006.
She will forever remain a living part of the Rainer Werner Fassbinder phenomenon: They were connected through an artistic symbiosis at their first meeting in a Munich acting school (1964-1966). Through his works she became the first movie star of the Young German Film.
At this point, the world’s most natural diva (she was never one for great hoopla) has reached an age that enables her to leave all star-expectations behind and to be only Hanna Schygulla. – One of the great film actresses of the European Cinema. – There is no danger that she might fall victim to vanity. She does not fight the burden of aging; instead she calmly embraces it.
When we see Hanna Schygulla on screen today, she embodies, though indirectly and solely in our mental projections, what we adored her for in such roles as Effi Briest, Maria Braun, Eva in BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ or Willie Bunterberg in LILI MARLEEN. However, at this point, she has reached a totally different juncture, as she never ceased to go forward.
The Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation, long and closely connected with Hanna Schygulla, wishes to extend its congratulations on her birthday and not least for her much-deserved prize.
