Hanna Schygulla documentation center planned in Havana
Film shoot with Cuban actress Bustamante Havana University plans to open a documentation center about Hanna Schygulla and her films. It will be part of the Cátedra Humboldt, an institute for German language and culture. At the gala entitled “Hanna Schygulla – Ma vie” to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the cultural institution, the plan was confirmed and an agreement signed. The Cubans are considered to be particularly interested in film. In addition, German has been part of the regular state curriculum since 1961. Hanna Schygulla’s enthusiasm for Latin America and especially for Cuba began during a film shoot in the early 1990s. In 1992, she was the lead in the TV series “Me alquilo para soñar“ (“I give myself to dreaming“). This is also when her close friendship with Cuban actress Alicia Bustamante – whom she calls her “exterior eye” – began. She compares the intensity of this relationship to the one she had with Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Right now, Hanna Schygulla is at work in Havana on a new documentary about her multi-facetted artist-colleague. In recent years, they have also appeared frequently together on stage. In 2004/2005, Bustamante participated in Schygulla’s evening of film and songs entitled “Dream Journals”. In 2007, both appeared at Hamburg’s Kammerspiele theater in Elfriede Jelinek’s play “The Death and the Maiden – Dramas of Princesses”. There will be additional events with Hanna Schygulla during the 31st Havana Film Festival in December. Hanna Schygulla will present her latest musical program entitled “Aus meinem Leben” (“From My Life”) in Germany on May 1 at the Opernhaus Halle, on May 3 in Potsdam’s Hans-Otto-Theater and on May 4 in the Wolf-Ferrari-Haus in Ottobrunn.
