Rosel Zech as Mother Courage at the Luisenburg Festspiele

Open-air performances in Wunsiedel, Bavaria

The Luisenburg Festspiele, a theater festival located in the Franconian town of Wunsiedel, will continue their open-air performances until the end of August. Each year, this festival shows classical and popular plays in addition to opera, operetta, and plays for children. Nestled in the idyllic Fichtelgebirge landscape, the current production features the glorious Rosel Zech as the lead in Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and her Children”. Although epic theater postulates that there is not to be a unity of space, time, and action, Pierre Walter Politz’s production returns the fictitious figure to one of the historic sites of the Thirty-Year-War and thereby also returns the figure to the play’s action itself.

Michael Lerchenberg is the director of this open-air stage, one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. Rosel Zech’s portrayal of Mother Courage is at the same time brilliant and burlesque; this leaves it to the viewers to make up their own minds whether they want to laugh or to cry.
