RWF’s Costume Designer Barbara Baum creates works for TV-film ROMY

To be aired on the ARD Station November 11, 2009, at 8:15PM

Whenever big German TV and cinema productions are being realized, one name always appears when it comes to costume design: Barbara Baum. Trained as a fashion designer, she worked for Rainer Werner Fassbinder from 1972-1982. She created the costumes for EFFI BRIEST, THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN, BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ, LILI MARLEEN, LOLA, VERONIKA VOSS and QUERELLE. She began to collaborate in films with such directors as Peter Fleischmann, Peter Lilienthal, Reinhard Hauff and Hans Jürgen Syberberg. After Fassbinder’s death, in the second half of the 1980s, she began to work for Bernhard Sinkel (FATHERS AND SONS) and Klaus Maria Brandauer (GEORG ELSER). In the 1990s, Barbara Baum was Costume Director for international productions such as Volker Schlöndorff’s (HOMO FABER) as well as Bernd Eichinger’s and Bille August’s (THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS and SMILLA’S SENSE OF SNOW). In 1993, she was awarded the Bayerischer Filmpreis for her complete oeuvre.

In recent years, her main focus were Heinrich Breloer and his opulent historical dramas, where she created, with much attention to historic detail and authenticity, the costumes for THE MANNS – A NOVEL OF A CENTURY (2001), SPEER AND HITLER: THE DEVIL’S ARCHITECT (2005) and BUDDENBROOKS: THE DECLINE OF A FAMILY (2008). The ARD-movie ROMY – about the life of the great star Romy Schneider – will be aired Wednesday, November 11 at 8:15PM. This will be yet another artistic milestone within the numerous productions in which Barbara Baum has left her idiosyncratic and creative handwriting.
