Barbara Sukowa still rocking at 60

Live on tour with the Band The X-Patsys

Barbara Sukowa first saw the light of day on 2 February 60 years ago in Bremen. Still going strong and in constant demand as an actor, she is returning to Germany in March, 2010, for three concerts entitled “Devouring Time – Alles verschlingende Zeit”.

Her career began in 1971 in the theatre under the direction of Luc Bondy and Peter Zadek, amongst others. Fassbinder first encountered her in 1977 at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, playing in WOMEN IN NEW YORK (based on The Women by Clare Boothe Luce). Her role as Mieze opposite Günter Lamprecht in BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (1979/80) brought her international fame. She went on to win Filmbands in Gold for the leading roles in Fassbinder’s LOLA (1981) and Margarethe von Trotta’s DIE BLEIERNE ZEIT (1981). For von Trotta’s next film, ROSA LUXEMBURG (1986) she also won Best Actress Award at Cannes.

Her international film career continued with THE SICILIAN (1987) directed by Michael Cimino; EUROPA (1991) by Lars van Trier; Volker Schlöndorff's HOMO FABER (1991) and CRADLE WILL ROCK (1999) by Tim Robbins. More films in Germany followed: THE INVENTION OF CURRIED SAUSAGE (2008) and another collaboration with Margarethe von Trotta in VISION – AUS DEM LEBEN DER HILDEGARD VON BINGEN, for which Sukowa received the Bavarian Film Award in 2010.

The second artistic string to her bow is as a classical singer. The rock band The X-Patsys, which was founded 30 years ago by her husband, multimedia artist Robert Longo and friends, has been revived by the two artists. Longo plays electric guitar while Sukowa has made completely new arrangements of old Country and Blues songs using lyrics by Shakespeare and Andreas Gryphius. Their first CD will be released soon.
