Retrospective for Michael Ballhaus in Paris

February 17 - 28 at the Cinémathèque Française

In the year of his 75th birthday, the prestigious Cinémathèque Française will screen an impressive 27 works in honor of Michael Ballhaus, Director of Photography for more than 90 German and Hollywood films.

The Cinémathèque’s survey emphasizes the two major segments of Ballhaus’s career: “Meeting Fassbinder” and “The Time in the US”. Interspersed in such classics as MARTHA, FOX AND HIS FRIENDS, MOTHER KÜSTERS GOES TO HEAVEN, CHINESE ROULETTE and THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN is a true rarity: BOURBON STREET BLUES, where Michael Ballhaus served as Director of Photography under the direction of Douglas Sirk and RWF appears as the protagonist.

The second part of this comprehensive retrospective comprises the Hollywood films, foremost his collaborations with Martin Scorsese: AFTER HOURS, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, GOODFELLAS, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, and GANGS OF NEW YORK. Also included are some of the grand productions Ballhaus realized with Mike Nichols, Robert Redford, Steve Kloves, Paul Newman and Francis Ford Coppola, among others.

Michael Ballhaus will be present at Cinémathèque Française, both for the opening and a subsequent film talk.
