Margit Carstensen Turns 70

Premiere of “Der elfte Gesang” at the Bochum Schauspielhaus

Congratulations to Margit Carstensen, who was born in Kiel on February 29, 1940 and is about to celebrate her birthday. She presently appears onstage at the Bochum Schauspielhaus in the world premiere of Roland Schimmelpfennig’s Der elfte Gesang.

In 1958, she laid the foundation for her career: She began to study acting at Hamburg’s Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst. After numerous smaller engagements, she landed her first big job at Hamburg’s Schauspielhaus in 1965, where she played under Gustav Gründgens. After joining the group around Fassbinder’s antiteater in 1970 she became one of his most important protagonists in his stage adaptations and was a star in a number of his films. Fassbinder wrote big roles for Margit Carstensen, among them Goldonia in The Coffeehouse (also in THE COFFEEHOUSE as a TV version), Geesche Gottfried in the play Bremen Freedom (1970), which was also filmed for TV, and Petra von Kant in The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant; in the 1972 film of the same title, she was awarded the German Bundesfilmpreis. Later followed Nora in the TV adaptation of NORA HELMER and other film leads, among them in MARTHA, FEAR OF FEAR, MOTHER KÜSTERS GOES TO HEAVEN, SATAN’S BREW and CHINESE ROULETTE. Mention must also be made of her portrayal of Ms. Haynes in WOMEN IN NEW YORK (1977). After she discontinued her collaboration with Fassbinder, she was associated with numerous different German theaters: they included the Staatstheater Darmstadt (1973-1976) and from 1977, the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin. Starting in 1982, she belonged to the ensemble of the Württembergisches Staatstheater Stuttgart, and from 1995 until 2006 she was a permanent member of Bochum’s Schauspielhaus ensemble.

Margit Carstensen continues to collaborate with leading directors, among them Hansgünther Heyme, Leander Haußmann and time and again Christoph Schlingensief. Her roles in the latter’s Ready-Made-Opera Mea Culpa at Vienna’s Burgtheater as well as in Eine Kirche der Angst vor dem Fremden in mir, also included at Berlin’s Theatertreffen in 2009, was met with enthusiastic critical acclaim.

In 2002, she received the Bavarian Filmpreis for her role as best supporting actress in SCHERBENTANZ by Chris Kraus. Her film appearances in Oskar Roehler’s AGNES AND HIS BROTHERS (2004) and Detlev Buck’s HÄNDE WEG VON MISSISSIPPI (2006) will remain unforgotten.

The RWFF Team and Juliane Lorenz wish Margit Carstensen all the best on her birthday.
