Homage To Elfi Mikesch & Werner Schroeter

“The Androgynous Gaze” / “Mary, Magdalene and All the Others”

Elfi Mikesch and Werner Schroeter have known each other for over forty years, and since 1984, they have collaborated many times. Elfi Mikesch was the D.O.P. of the following Werner Schroeter films:

·      THE ROSE KING (1984)
·      MALINA (1990)
·      POUSSIÈRES D’AMOUR – LOVE’S DEBRIS (1996)
·      DEUX - TWO (2002)

Both will have important anniversaries this spring. The Schwules Museum Berlin dedicates two exhibitions to them from March 24 until June 28, 2010:

“Der androgyne Blick” / “The Androgynous Gaze”
Elfi Mikesch: Directon, Camera, Photography
Homage to her 70th Birthday

“Maria, Magdalena und all die anderen” / “Mary, Magdalene and All the Others”
Homage to Werner Schroeter’s 65th Birthday

In her contribution to this year’s Teddy Award, bestowed upon Werner Schroeter, Elfi Mikesch describes her artistic relationship to him: “Dear Werner, in our case, camera work is always an intimate encounter between you as the director with the distinctive camera eyes and my tentacular photographic gaze that connects us. An encounter that strives for intuitive analysis appears to be a contradiction in terms, but this also stresses the freedom to discover a story, and it is often your story.“*

Werner Schroeter writes about Elfi Mikesch: “From the beginning on, we had a specific communication code and very deep trust. While Elfi’s poetry is different from mine, it is equally multi faceted. Elfi gives the content of many images a structure, and she derives poetry from it. In my case, the poetry originates from the void, in Elfi’s from motion and condensation. This overlap enables us to collaborate.”*

The award presented to Werner Schroeter is also a memorial to Magdalena Montezuma, who died very young and for whom Schroeter wrote the film THE ROSE KING, the first co-operation between Elfi Mikesch, Werner Schroeter and Juliane Lorenz. This led to Elfi Mikesch’s working as D.O.P. for Juliane Lorenz’s subsequent documentaries.

Opening with surprise guests on March 23, 2010 at 7PM at the SchwuZ Mehringdamm 61, 10961 Berlin.
