Rosel Zech with “33 Variationen” in Berlin
Performances in April & May at the Renaissance-Theater
33 Variationen (“33 Variations”), is the title of the play about Ludwig van Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. The German premiere is currently on view at Berlin’s Renaissance-Theater. Brilliantly cast, Rosel Zech is the musicologist Dr. Katherine Brandt, who is hailed by the Berlin critics and the public alike. In his stagebill introduction to the play, Moisés Kaufmann writes: “The idea is invaluable(!) thinks the savvy Viennese composer and music publisher Anton Diabelli and proceeds to put his ideas into practice: In 1819, he asks each of the 50 ‘most distinguished’ composers, among them Liszt and Schubert, to submit one variation of a waltz-theme. And almost all of them diligently submit their contributions. But at first, Ludwig van Beethoven only sneers at Diabelli’s simple melody: Full of contempt, the merciless composer refuses to waste his precious time for this ‘little-melody’. His harsh refusal is historically documented. Yet, his obsession is also documented: It takes hold of him a little later and drives him to create the piano cycle that was to become a keystone work of music history: the ‘33 modifications about a waltz by Anton Diabelli’ op. 120, in brief: the Diabelli Variations.”
