On May 31, RWF would have turned 65
A Star in German Film History
On May 31, the anniversary year 2010 reaches a climax. One gift to mark the occasion of RWF’s 65th birthday was the restored version of WORLD ON A WIRE. Facilitated by the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation, it could already be admired during the 60th Berlinale in February. Further works are to follow in the second half of the year as valuable DVD premieres! A memorial for Rainer Werner Fassbinder will be placed on the newly created Boulevard of Stars on Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, where RWF will receive his own star for “outstanding contributions” to more than 100 years of German film and TV history. Even during RWF’s lifetime, the Goethe-Institut helped to promote his oeuvre throughout the world, and it continues to do so, currently as “an important contribution towards an in-depth study of Germany”. Long-time film critic for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and journalist Hans Günther Pflaum writes in his commemorative publication: “We still miss him – on 31st May 2010 Rainer Werner Fassbinder would have been 65”.
Other personalities from the realms of film, theater, politics are closely connected with the Fassbinder Foundation and have birthdays that fall on May 31: Camera woman and director Elfi Mikesch will be 70; theater, opera, and film director and author Hans Neuenfels will be 69; journalist and former Vice-President of the German Federal Parliament Dr. Antje Vollmer will be 67. We would like to extend our congratulations to these birthday girls and boys as well.
For RWF’s 65th birthday, the German national TV Station ARD will air:
The night of May 31 to June 01 at 12:50AM: LILI MARLEEN
The night of June 01 to June 02 at 12:20AM: THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN
The night of June 02 to June 03 at 12:35AM: THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT
