I ONLY WANT YOU TO LOVE ME and OF LOVE AND CONSTRAINTS

Restored version of the original film and documentary film at the Munich Film Festival

Rainer Werner Fassbinder tells the story of a construction worker named Peter (Vitus Zeplichal) who grew up without compassion, let alone love, during Germany’s economic miracle. Peter has recognized that human relationships are based on the rules of capitalism, on “exchanges and purchases”, and has adapted to them. He attempts to buy the love of his family and wife by giving them generous gifts. When he can no longer afford these gifts and his life’s fragile foundation threatens to collapse, catastrophe strikes. Fassbinder's screenplay is based on a true story from the book Lebenslänglich—Protokolle aus der Haft (Life Sentences—Reports from Prison) by Klaus Antes and Christiane Ehrhardt. The film was produced in November/December1975 for the WDR broadcasting company and was aired on ARD television on March 23, 1976. The Munich Film Festival will present the German premiere of the version restored by Bavaria 2010. It will be shown in HD on the big screen at CinemaxX 5 on Friday, July 2, at 10 p.m. (original with English subtitles).

OF LOVE AND CONSTRAINTS

Speculations on Fassbinder’s “I Only Want You to Love Me,” by Robert Fischer

In his sixty-minute documentary, Robert Fischer, who considers the film to be the director's most personal, explores the (possible) close connection between the director and his protagonist Peter. Fischer’s film is not only a belated “making of”, but an examination of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the man, and his artistic motivation. The documentary will be shown on Saturday, 3 July 2010, at 3 p.m. in the Munich Film Museum.

An additional highlight:
Vitus Zeplichal will also be represented at the Munich Film Festival. His film ZAPPING-ALIEN@MOZART-BALLS will be shown on Wednesday, 30 June, at 10:30 p.m. and on Friday, 2 July, at 5:30 p.m. at CinemaxX 1 (original with English subtitles).
