Berlinale Camera to be awarded to Michael Ballhaus
It is definitely not an exaggeration to call Michael Ballhaus the most famous contemporary German cameraman. He is one of his profession’s superstars and has been working for many years in Hollywood, where he is involved in gigantic movies. Among his regular collaborators is Martin Scorsese with whom Ballhaus has been working since 1985. On Sunday, February 12, the Berlinale Camera will we awarded to him, and he sure deserves this prize.
Fassbinder fans and friends know this, but we would like to point out to all visitors of our website that Michael Ballhaus and Rainer Werner Fassbinder were of mutual importance for one another. The actor Ulli Lommel introduced the two to each other. Out of this first meeting evolved an intense and important collaboration over many years. During this time, they realized fourteen movies, among them such key works as “Whity” (1970), “Beware of a Holy Whore” (1970), The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant” (1972), “World on a Wire” (1973) “Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven” (1975), “Chinese Roulette” (1976), “The Stationmaster’s Wife” (1976/77), “Despair” (1977), and “The Marriage of Maria Braun” (1978).
We are incredibly glad for Michael Ballhaus as we feel deep friendship and appreciation with him and his work.
