Fassbinder’s posthumously discovered play: Water Drops on Burning Rocks to be performed in Berlin in July
A Co-Production between Opera Dynamo West, the Cultural Office – ‘honest work’ and Berlin’s Hebbel Theater am Ufer (HAU) As part of Opera Dynamo West’s series of projects for 2008, Franziska Seeberg and Julie Rüter will present Tropfen auf heiße Steine (Water Drops on Burning Rocks) in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg. Set against the sparse surroundings of a deserted supermarket, the characters in Fassbinder’s play come across Robert Schumann’s romantic songs. This ‘comedy with a pseudo-tragic ending’ – or so the play’s epithet – is an encounter with Schumann’s short song cycle ‘A Woman’s Love and Life’, in which dark humour clashes with romantic notions of devotion and surrender. Musical director stephanpaul has created a new score to present Fassbinder’s play as an operatic concert for four actors, a female singer and a pianist. The premiere will take place at 8 p.m. on July 4, 2008 in a disused supermarket in Wrangelstraße 85, in 10997 Berlin-Kreuzberg. There will be further performances at the same venue on 05. | 10., 11. & 12. July | at 8 p.m.
