THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN on stage at Berlin’s Schaubühne

Die-Ehe-der-Maria-Braun_2 Foto rechtsSince 6 September, Thomas Ostermeier’s stage adaption of THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN, which was premiered in Avignon in summer this year, has been running again at Berlin’s Schaubühne theatre.

The production is based on the film of the same name by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Based on a script by Pea Fröhlich and Peter Märthesheimer, the dramaturgs Julia Lochte and Florian Borchmeyer devised a new version for the stage. The production was invited to the Berlin Theater Festival in 2008 in a staging by the Münchner Kammerspiele. Returning to his home theater, director Ostermeier has recast the piece. The leading role originally played by Brigitte Hobmeier is now played by Ursina Lardi. The play, like the film, deals with an enterprising woman who has no choice but to fend for herself during the Second World War and the Economic Miracle and in the process does not shy from using sex as a commodity.

This first part of Fassbinder’s West German Trilogy is undoubtedly one of his most well-known films and represents a highlight in the career of leading actor Hanna Schygulla.

The next performances will take place on 10 and 11 November 2014 at 8 p.m.
