Theatertreffen – Focus Fassbinder

The Theatertreffen will continue the Focus series it launched in 2014. This year, the focus will be on the director, author and performer Rainer Werner Fassbinder. His work is currently more present on German stages than ever. His method of reflecting history in stories and his artistic aspiration of bearing contemporary witness seem to be as topical as a recurring political theme of his work: the pervasion of private lives by the fascist mindsets from the national socialist era.
In parallel with the exhibition Fassbinder – NOW at the Martin-Gropius-Bau (opening on 5 May 2015), the Theatertreffen will present Susanne Kennedy’s “Why Does Mr R Run Amok?”, a production of the Münchner Kammerspiele that was selected as one of the ten most remarkable productions to be presented at the Theatertreffen 2015. Other performances of Fassbinder’s works from Berlin theatres are in planning. This series of performances will be complemented by film screenings, readings and a symposium on Fassbinder’s impact on contemporary theatre, which will be organised in cooperation with the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation and sponsored by the Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung.
