The year 1982 was one of strange and sad coincidences for the German film world. Romy Schneider and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who were planning to work together on a film adaptation of Piligrilli’s novel COCAIN, died within two weeks of one another, the actress on May 29 and the film-maker on June 10. Only a few days later, on June 18, the German film star Curd Jürgens also passed away. 1982 was also marked by the death of renowned post-war director Konrad Wolf, who died in March that year in what was then the GDR.

This year the town of Bad Wörishofen, where Fassbinder was born, is marking the anniversary of its famous son’s death on June 10 with a commemorative event in the Filmhaus cinema. A public reception will be held from 10:30 am and followed by a screening of Hans Günther Pflaum’s documentary I DON’T JUST WANT YOU TO LOVE ME. In the evening there will be a screening of KATZELMACHER and on Tuesday June 12 at 8 pm the cinema will be showing Fassbinder’s LOLA.

From June 8-25 the German-French TV broadcaster ARTE will be presenting an extensive retrospective of Fassbinder’s work, comprising 10 full-length feature films and including the newly restored version of the two-part WORLD ON A WIRE.
