“Dear Fassbinder: el anarquista romantic” – Fassbinder events in Madrid

Between February and April 2013, the Goethe Institute in Madrid is presenting an extensive and varied program around the theme of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The series of events begins on February 27 with the first ever Spanish production of The Coffee House, RWF’s script based on a play by Carlo Goldoni. The play’s director is Dan Jemmett, who has previously worked a great deal in France and in 2008 directed Teatro de La Abadía’s successful production of The Trickster of Seville.

On February 28 (6 p.m.) Bernhard Chappuzeau will hold a lecture on cinematic theatricality based on his 2004 doctoral dissertation, “Transgression and Trauma in the work of Pedro Almodóvar und Rainer Werner Fassbinder. From 2006 to 2010 Chappuzeau headed the information center of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Argentina and held a guest professorship at the University of Buenos Aires. In addition, from March 11-21, the VJ and film artist Jan Speckenbach will hold several workshops exploring the possibilities integrating video images into theater productions.

The program will also include two dance evenings from 10 p.m. to midnight featuring the electronic artist T. Raumschmiere (March 1) and the band Pollyester (March 22). The venue for all these events is the Teatro de La Abadía.

Parallel to this series of events, the Cine Estudio des Círculo de Bellas Artes is presenting a retrospective of 12 Fassbinder films running from March 14 to April 14.
