„Fear Eats Germany“ at Berlin´s Schaubühne

The sensibilities of a country towards “intellectual-moral” transformation

Director Patrick Wengenroth characterizes his piece as, “retrospectively looking forward from the viewpoint and with the words of Rainer Werner Fassbinder.” The series of interviews conducted with Fassbinder between 1969 and 1982 and published unabridged for the first time in 2004 by Verlag the Autoren in the book Fassbinder über Fassbinder (Fassbinder on Fassbinder) provided Wengenroth with a rich source of material from which to construct a series of scenes, in part accompanied by music. In conversation, Fassbinder revealed a keen political sensibility, a capacity for clear-sighted and unsparing analysis of prevailing social relations and his own role within them. The dramaturg Nils Haarmann has compiled extracts and passages of dialog from these interviews to create a “theater evening about Germany’s emotional condition—today, yesterday and the day after tomorrow.” The result is not least the biography of an artist against the background of his times.

Wengenroth himself has taken on the challenging task of playing the role(s) of RWF, who enters into a complex and deceptive interplay with the usual suspects: Hanna Schygulla, Irm Hermann, Peer Raben, and many others.
