Katzelmacher at the Landestheater Schwaben
Premiere on February 1, 2013 on the main stage in Memmingen
The second part of the current theater season at the Landestheater Schwaben is opening with this small but finely wrought production of one of RWF’s early works. Katzelmacher was originally written and produced as a theater play by Fassbinder in 1968 and turned into a multi-award winning film one year later.
The Landestheater’s program announcement includes the following sketch of the plot: “In a working-class neighborhood, a group of young people leads an aimless existence, still cherishing hopes of a better future. As so often happens, a foreign element causes disquiet. In this case, it is a guest worker from Greece, whose presence results in rifts forming between the group’s members. For the men, he soon becomes a scapegoat, while for the women he represents the promise of an exotic adventure. The stranger is referred to as a ‘Katzelmacher,’ a derogatory term used at the time for guest workers. In the end, some of the young people decide that violence is the only solution for their supposed problem.”
All performances in the Grosses Haus (main stage) will be preceded by an introduction to the play on the CaféhausBühne half an hour before the performance begins.
This production directed by Peter Kersten will also be performed in Fassbinder’s hometown as part of this year’s Bad Wörishofen theater festival, which runs from May 10-13.
Another tip:
Since November last year, the German-Turkish director Hakan Savaş Mican’s highly successful production of Katzelmacher has been running on the studio stage of the State Theater in Mainz. (Coming performances: February 4, February 13 and March 12, 2013)
