Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod (Garbage, the City and Death)

Between 1975, the year it was written, and 2009, the play had never been publicly performed in Germany – apart from an amateur staging in Bochum in 1979 and a press performance on November 4, 1985 at the Schauspiel Frankfurt (dir. Dietrich Hilsdorf). On October 1 and 2, 2009, Roberto Ciulli and Helmut Schäfer realized the German premiere at Mülheim’s Theater an der Ruhr, where the play was part of a tripartite repertoire entitled FASSBINDER Only a Slice of Bread | Garbage, the City and Death | Blood on a Cat’s Neck.

The world premiere occurred in New York City in 1987 (dir. Nick Fracaro). Further stagings abroad include: Copenhagen, Denmark, 1987 (dir. Klaus Hoffmeyer); Malmö, Sweden, 1989; Los Angeles, USA, 1997 (dir. Frédérique Michel); Milan, Italy, 1998 (dir. Elio de Capitani/Ferdinando Bruni); Tel Aviv, Israel, 1999 (dir. Yoram Loewenstein); The Hague, The Netherlands, 2002 (dir. Johan Doesburg); Paris, France, 2003 (dir. Pierre Maillet) and Copenhagen, Denmark, 2004 (dir. Jacob Schjodt). It was once again in Copenhagen that an interesting performance project took place in 2010 that was initiated by the private film and theater school Holberg (dir. Liv Helm). In this staging, the figure of the “rich Jew” was played by an Arab refugee. Further performances: Dublin, Ireland, 2010 (dir. Jane Mulcahy).
