Irm Hermann to Play in Woyzeck at Zurich’s Schauspielhaus
From September until October en suite
This fall finds Irm Hermann busy once again. Starting September 13, she will play a double role in Stefan Pucher’s Woyzeck production. In his staging, she will be the story-telling Grandmother as well as the fool Karl. Surely, these portrayals provide further proof of her versatility; she continues to deliver brilliant performances in breeches roles, most recently at Berlin’s Komische Oper as the Emperor in Im weißen Rößl. / The White Horse Inn. Last year, director Pucher staged Fassbinder’s Satan’s Brew to critical acclaim at the Münchner Kammerspiele. And now Büchner follows in Zurich. Thus, the city celebrates the 200th birthday of the German writer (*17.10.1813, †19.02.1837) who worked here on his drama while suffering attacks of fever until his death at the tender age of 23. Woyzeck is unfinished, and to this day some portions of the manuscript remain undecipherable. Georg Büchner is buried on the Germaniahügel in Zurich.
This summer, Irm Hermann began her collaboration with the project “Dem Weggehen zugewandt” (i.e. Looking to Depart). Supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, this interdisciplinary piece of musical theater attempts to return memories to the generation of those over 75 by virtue of sounds and melodies. To this end, an “archive of voices” has been assembled; this forms the basis for a composition by the Italian Manuela Kerer: “An evening of musical theater for a grand ‘Chorus of the Elderly,’ six actors, and a string orchestra.” Maria Magdalena Ludewig is the artistic director. After performances in Hamburg and Berlin, the piece will be performed in Dresden on September 27 and 28. This is a co-production of Union Universal and the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop with Kampnagel, HELLERAU – EUROPÄISCHES ZENTRUM DER KÜNSTE DRESDEN, and RADIALSYSTEM V in Berlin.
