There are still numerous treasures hidden in the archives of the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation. Just now, we are pleased to announce the first publication of a RWF Mono-Drama, as editor Karlheinz Braun calls this piece, published by the Verlag der Autoren.
MonoDramen 15 Stücke, 376 pages. € 22,- / SFr. 30,80; ISBN 978-3-88661-363-2).

At this point, there are no plans for an English edition.

“A mono-drama is a piece that only requires one person on stage,“ states Braun in his introduction, referring to A Normal Human Ugly Voice which Fassbinder wrote in 1979 in Berlin.

In our archives, it is labelled  “ new version, based on the play by Jean Cocteau, written by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, to be filmed on video for German TV.”

Karlheinz Braun explains: “What inspired Fassbinder to write his version was Cocteau’s famous one-act play, La Voix Humaine (1929). Fassbinder planned a video recording of the piece for TV. The solo part was created for Volker Spengler, who was already, in 1978, playing the part of the transsexual Erwin / Elvira Weishaupt in Fassbinder’s film In a Year with 13 Moons. The project was never carried out. The script is kept in the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation. This is the first time that it has been published.”

We wish everyone insightful readings.
