Blood on the Cat’s Neck in the USA

From April 25 at the Torn Space Theater in Buffalo

Blood on the Cat’s Neck is another one of Fassbinder’s commissioned works and was written at the beginning of the 1970s for the Städtische Bühnen in Nuremberg. The premiere by the antitheater ensemble took place on March 20, 1971 as part of the series of events held that year to mark the 500th birthday of Albrecht Dürer. At the time the play’s subtitle, “Marilyn Monroe contre les vampires,” was understandably met with a degree of confusion. In the play the extraterrestrial Phoebe Zeitgeist comes to Earth and initially learns human language only phonetically. As a consequence, she speaks in collages of text, repeating sentences without understanding their import. Dissociated from their original meaning, the words she uses nevertheless have an effect on other individuals. The disturbed communication of a society full of desires and shot through with diverse dependencies within a network of power and repression is presented in unfiltered form. However, ultimately it is the indifference of people that leads Phoebe to attack and kill them in a fit of vampirism.

Over recent years, Blood on the Cat’s Neck has been repeatedly performed by small theater ensembles and experimental companies in the USA. The current production by the Torn Space Theater in Buffalo (New York State) is directed by Dan Shanahan.
