Ula Stöckl’s THE CAT HAS NINE LIVES on July 15 in Kino Arsenal

Panel representing three generations covering 45 years of women’s movement

In 2013 the Deutsche Kinemathek is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. It is marking this special year with the series “Filmspotting – Exploring the Deutsche Kinemathek’s Film Archive.” The film selected for the month of July is Ula Stöckl’s 1968 debut work THE CAT HAS NINE LIVES, which today is regarded as marking the beginning of feminist cinema in Germany. The film revolves around episodic observations of the lives of five young women: Katharina, Anne, Magdalena, Gabriele and Kirke. These characters provide a means of formulating models of female strategies of emancipation from prevailing gender relations that are (still) seen as generally valid.
